Understanding Prescription-Only Treatment for Expression Lines
Some treatments used for expression lines involve prescription-only medicines, such as botulinum toxin type A. These treatments can only be prescribed following a consultation with a qualified medical professional, after assessing medical history, suitability and individual risk factors.
This page provides general information to help you understand how these treatments work and when they may be considered.
Treatment Overview
The prescription-only product we commonly use is Azzalure (manufactured by Galderma).
According to the patient information leaflet, Azzalure contains botulinum toxin type A and works by temporarily blocking nerve signals to selected muscles, reducing their activity and helping to soften the appearance of expression lines.
Its effects are localised to the treated area and are temporary.
What are expression lines?
Expression lines, often referred to as dynamic lines, are the visible result of repeated facial movements caused by dynamic muscle activity, such as frowning, smiling or raising the eyebrows.
Over time, these lines may become visible even when the face is at rest, particularly as skin quality and elasticity change. By limiting the movement of targeted muscles, the product may soften the appearance of these lines.
What this treatment is used for
Prescription-only treatment may be considered for the temporary improvement in the appearance of moderate to severe dynamic lines.
As stated in the product information, the recommended treatment areas include:
- lines between the eyebrows – glabellar lines
- lines around the outer corners of the eyes – lateral canthal lines (crow’s feet)
Suitability and assessment
The suitability of the treatment depends on the individual and the underlying cause of the concern. It is not suitable for everyone. A full consultation is required to:
- review medical history
- assess facial movement and skin quality
- determine whether treatment is appropriate
- consider any factors that may affect safety or outcome
In some cases, a different treatment approach, or no treatment, may be recommended.
Risks and considerations
As with any medical treatment, there are potential risks and side effects.
Commonly reported side effects may include temporary redness, swelling or bruising at the injection site. Some patients may also experience mild headache or a feeling of tightness in the treated area.
Less commonly, effects such as drooping of the eyelid or asymmetry may occur due to the way muscles respond to treatment.
These effects are usually temporary and vary depending on the individual, the area treated and other health factors.
All potential risks, side effects and suitability will be discussed with you during your consultation before any treatment is considered.
What results may look like
When appropriate, the aim of treatment is to soften the appearance of certain lines while maintaining natural facial movement.
Results vary between individuals and depend on factors such as muscle activity, skin condition and overall facial structure.
The effect is temporary and gradually wears off. Over time, muscle activity returns and lines may gradually reappear. The duration varies between individuals.
