Streatham Clinic

Our Approach to Microneedling

At our Streatham clinic, we like to use microneedling to treat acne scarring, uneven skin texture, visible pores or early fine lines.

We prefer a careful and controlled approach rather than being unnecessarily aggressive. We do not believe the skin needs to be left excessively bleeding or “red raw” in order to get a good response. The treatment is adjusted according to your skin, the area being treated and what you would like to improve, with additional attention given to more stubborn concerns, such as areas of deeper scarring.

We understand that you may be concerned about downtime, especially when you have work, social plans and a busy London routine. Your skin will usually look flushed or red for the first 24 hours, but for many people it is already considerably calmer by the following day.

Results develop gradually as the skin goes through its natural repair and remodelling process. For acne scarring, microneedling can be particularly useful for some shallower and rolling scars. For pores, uneven texture and early fine lines, the aim is generally smoother, fresher-looking skin rather than a dramatic change.

We usually begin with a course of around three to four treatments approximately one month apart, then review how your skin has responded before deciding whether any further sessions would be beneficial.

For more detail about how the treatment works, depths, suitability and the different types of scarring that may respond, visit our Microneedling Treatment Guide.

“Microneedling is my go-to treatment when scarring is the main concern. It’s also great for general skin quality, but you don’t need to be overly aggressive with the skin to get a good response.”

Your Microneedling Appointment at Streatham

Microneedling treatments at our Streatham clinic are carried out by Natasha Akbar, Registered Nurse.

Before recommending treatment, Natasha will discuss what is bothering you about your skin, assess the area and review your medical history.

If you still have active inflammatory acne, for example, microneedling may need to wait. The aim is to treat the scarring once the active condition is appropriately controlled rather than repeatedly irritating inflamed skin.

If microneedling is suitable and you are happy to proceed, treatment can take place during the same appointment.

Your treatment plan can also take into account other skin treatments available at Streatham. If hydration, the under-eye area or general skin resilience is more of a concern than texture or scarring, Natasha may discuss other options such as polynucleotides or skin boosters instead.

Questions About Microneedling From Streatham Clients

Nurse Natasha: “It can help with certain types of acne scarring, and that’s one of the reasons I would consider microneedling in younger patients. Shallower or rolling scars generally respond better than very deep scars. I would want to look at the type of scarring you have first because sometimes microneedling alone isn’t going to give you the improvement you’re hoping for.”

Nurse Natasha: “I wouldn’t recommend having treatment just because you’ve reached a certain age. If you have visible pores, uneven texture, acne scarring or you’re starting to notice early changes in your skin, then there may be a good reason to treat. If your skin is already healthy and you don’t really have a concern, I don’t think we need to keep treating it unnecessarily.”

Nurse Natasha: “You should expect some redness and your skin can feel warm or tight afterwards, but the aim isn’t to leave you excessively red or bleeding. A lot of the dramatic microneedling videos you see online are much more aggressive than treatment needs to be. For many people, the skin is already considerably calmer by the following day, although everyone heals slightly differently.”
Nurse Natasha: “It depends on what you’re trying to improve. If scarring or uneven texture is your main concern, microneedling would often be the option I’d look at first. If your skin is more dehydrated or you’re mainly looking for hydration and general skin quality, a skin booster or another injectable skin treatment may make more sense. We can look at your skin and decide rather than trying to choose the treatment yourself.”
